Spanning over 700 hectares, this place is not just a homestead, but a living example of the profound connection between man and the natural world. Practising organic certified farming since 1999, Monte Silveira has been on a continuous journey of evolution, driven by a solid commitment to soil care, promotion of biodiversity and ecosystem regeneration.

In a privileged location, Monte Silveira is part of the first Portuguese Bio-Region (Idanha-a-Nova) and the UNESCO Tagus International Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, being a bastion of biodiversity, housing a diverse range of flora and fauna within its boundaries.

The proximity of the Natura 2000 Network further reinforces the ecological importance of Monte Silveira, enriching its surroundings with a mosaic of habitats and species, where each being has a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem. This commitment to biodiversity conservation is not just a practice, but a source of inspiration for everyone who visits or gets to know Monte Silveira Farm.

At the heart of the Monte Silveira’s landscape lies the Montado agroforestry system, a time-honoured Mediterranean ecosystem shaped by centuries of human management. This unique landscape, characterized by cork and holm oak forest, dates back to prehistoric times and represents a living testament to the enduring relationship between man and nature.

The pulse of Monte Silveira resonates with the rhythms of the ecosystem and regenerative agriculture. In 2017, the farm embarked on a transformative journey towards holistic management, recognizing the need to address the challenges posed by semi-arid conditions and climate change. This paradigm shift marked the beginning of a new era, where rotational grazing and regenerative practices became the pillars of farm management, inspiring a new generation of farmers.
In this setting of natural splendour, Monte Silveira Farm stands as a beacon of sustainability and regeneration. By embracing the principles of regenerative agriculture and holistic management, the farm seeks to preserve the ecological integrity of the Montado, whilst ensuring the prosperity of future generations. From its panoramic views to its vibrant ecosystems, Monte Silveira epitomizes the beauty and resilience of Portugal’s rural landscapes, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and renewal.

Monte Silveira features a diverse set of farming practices that harmoniously combine tradition with innovation, ensuring environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity. Across its extensive 700-hectare landscape, the farm features a diverse array of crops and livestock, each carefully tended to maximize biodiversity, soil health and ecosystem resilience.

The agroforestry system, which occupies 500 hectares of Monte Silveira, is the cornerstone of its diverse practices. Here, a symphony of different livestock species, including cattle, pigs, goats, horses and sheep, roams the lush pastures, grazing on an abundance of fresh grass and acorns. This integration of livestock into the landscape not only nourishes the animals but also increases soil fertility, promotes plant growth and preserves biodiversity.

The remaining 200 hectares of the farm are cultivated with a wide variety of crops, complementing the agroforestry system. Monte Silveira is proud of its commitment to seed multiplication and the production of legumes, cereals and extra virgin olive oil, each contributing to the agricultural diversity and gastronomic heritage of the region, nationally and internationally.

Legumes production encompasses an impressive selection of beans, chickpeas, peas, cowpeas and lupins, meticulously grown to perfection under the Mediterranean sun. These nutrient-rich legumes serve as a source of sustenance for both humans and livestock and play a vital role in increasing soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
Monte Silveira’s cereal production encompasses a variety of grains. Each is grown with care and precision to produce high-quality yields. These grains form the basis of the farm’s agricultural production, providing sustenance for humans and animals while contributing to the region’s food security and economic prosperity.

At the centre of Monte Silveira’s agricultural practices is the cultivation of olives, from which top-quality olive oil is meticulously extracted. The olive trees, rooted in the farm’s fertile soil, produce an abundance and variety of hand-picked and cold-pressed olives to produce high-phenolic extra virgin olive oil of incomparable quality. This liquid gold, with a high phenolic content, adorns chefs’ tables and serves as proof of the farm’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

In addition to primary crops, Monte Silveira embraces the cultivation of cover crops and the production of high-quality compost as integral components of its diversified agricultural practices. Cover crops, planted strategically throughout the farm, serve multiple purposes, including soil protection, erosion control, and nutrient recycling. These green manures improve soil structure and fertility and provide a valuable source of forage for livestock, further integrating crop and animal rotation into the ecological system.
Furthermore, Monte Silveira uses a closed-loop waste management system, where by-products from agricultural activities are recycled and reused to produce high-quality compost. This nutrient-rich compost, inoculated with beneficial soil bacteria and fungi, serves as a natural fertilizer that replenishes the soil and promotes plant growth. By harnessing the power of circularity and sustainability, Monte Silveira ensures that all aspects of its agricultural practices contribute to the health and vitality of the ecosystem in which it operates.
Monte Silveira farm is a shining example of the potential of diverse agricultural practices to promote environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and social well-being. Through its commitment to biodiversity, soil health and ecosystem resilience, the farm embodies the timeless wisdom of working in harmony with nature, inspiring positive change in the agricultural landscape and beyond.
